Maybe the annual servicing helped. Obviously not BG though, or they would have sold him several new ones in that time.

My mother passed away last year and the boiler in her house was an Ideal WRS wall mounted model, it was installed by my brother when he was an apprentice about 1974. It was still working fine up until us selling the house, and in all that time apart from servicing the only items that had to be replaced were, the pump (changed from a SMC to a Grundfos) and several thermocouples.

It even had the original Potterton Mini Minder clock

40 years is quite a long time, I dont know what vintage it is but one of the houses I stayed in as a graduate had a dirty big gas glowworm in the cellar which must have been there a fair while given the state of it externally, but it was clean as a whistle on the inside, serviced annually, cracking job. Warmest cellar Ive ever had the pleasure to work in!
