thinnest subfloor on market? can you lay eng wood floor direct to joists thanks

Hi guys,


I’m trying to keep my floor build-up as low as possible due to issues.


What’s the thinnest subfloor I can use that will still work with 20mm engineered wood flooring?



Can I also fit the 20mm engineered wood floor straight onto 8x2 joists without a subfloor, to save height?

That's a no for going directly on the joists.
Is it oak or bamboo or something else.

Some suppliers say yes for the thicker boards. The problem is most suppliers only have thinner boards.

I think floorboards are 20mm but they are the full length of the room but flooring is usually in shorter 1200 or something planks an will keep coming up against floating ends with no joists.
Also engineered floor is meant for floating and not fixed down, unless you can also fix it down as an option.

You could get fiddly, and fit your structural floor between the joists on battens, maybe leave it 2mm proud of the joists to account for movement.
But bear in mind, joists are supposed to be fitted with the idea that they will have floorboards or sheets mechanically fixed to them.

Could the following work? If the joists, the sub floor and the engineered wood flooring is to high, my logical thinking, as long as it’s only a small amount/area, could you not take some of the floor joists and have them planed down to the height you needed?

yes you can

ply in between the joists with 18mm ply set on battens

that way you can put the 20mm engineered straight on the joists

Id say you will need sausage glue
