Hmm, I wonder why

That's an impressive level of corrosion - was it a very old box, or had it been located under a dripping tap? (or in the bath?!)

It was in a damp underfloor void.

It is more impressive in the flesh.

If you look at the underside of the box, it is cracked across the middle, and the bottom (which is usually flat, of course) is concave.

Also, where the lid screw went, the material is charred, so there's been a lot of heat there.

I've got one of those too.

Mine was under a floor and taken with my phone though, so is not very clear.

The lid was missing when I arraved at the JB and one of the lives had burnt its self clear of the JB terminal.

My favourite 'junction box' find was three nails in a loft joist, with corresponding red, black and bare cables wound round them. Wish I'd had my camera.

I just took out a load of little octopuses - 3-terminal JBs with 6-8 cables entering each and the bare CPCs all neatly twisted together on top in a wire nut, like a little head! (No way of reopening the JB.)
