Like most I find nothing joists a complete pain, so anything to make it easier, quicker and more accurate has to be a good thing.

So, I was thinking, wouldn't it be possible to use a normal wall chaser with a couple of wood blades on it? it has the width and depth adjustment so it would seem to be a bit of a winner.

Has anyone done this, or can anyone think of a reason why it wouldn't work?

Never done it, but can't see why it wouldn't work.

I just use my circular saw and knock the notch out with a hammer.

Reciprocating saw makes life very easy. The neatest way and still quick and easy is 30 mm coredrill centred just the surface of the joist. This will give you a 25 mm deep notch, nice and smooth and because the top of the core drill is above the joist, the chips do not clog up the teeth and it will cut like hot knife through butter. You do need angled drill for this though.
