We have central heating pipes in the wall of our bedroom that are plastered in. When the heating is on they make an intermittent but frequent ticking noise which is loud enough to wake us up. I have read that with ticking pipes under floorboards the best thing to do is put felt around them, but is this the solution here? When they were put in we were told that they had to be copper pipes because plaster would erode plastic pipes, if we put felt around these pipes would the plaster erode that?

I've never heard of plastic being eroded by plaster, but it does expand and contract a lot more than copper. Are you sure it's the plaster that's causing the noise, not the pipes rubbing against a timber in the space above?
