But why do so many equipment manufacturers insist on using these horrible screws anyway?

Only for your convenience.

If they wanted to increase assembly output, they'd replace them all with torx screws: No camming out, and only 60 degrees maximum rotation before driver engagement. When you are inserting millions of screws in thousands of assemblies, the extra fractions of seconds required to rotate the tool soon add up.
