Why is wrong to apply adhesive directly to the tile, and not the wall?

Don't worry, it's not a sin. It'll still work, it's just quicker and less fiddly to apply the adhesive to the wall.

Its also less messy and you get a flatter finish.
In my diy days I used to apply adhesive to the tiles and ended up with more adhesive on me and on the face of the tiles than on the back of them.

put on the wall to ensure you have the same thickness of adhesive - thus flatter finish.
Cheers guys, tried both and got a far better finish with the adhesive going on the walls.
