I live in a Glasgow tenement flat. I have a door tread which normally sits just outside the front door, in the vestibule between the front door and the outer storm doors, consisting of a tile/ceramic 'strip' with decorative top and sides and a rough base. The mortar/cement base has mostly come away, leaving two fragments at each end such that most of the tread floats about half an inch off the floor. This is not good as the tread is brittle and will likely break if anyone steps on it.
So, my question is: what should I use to make good the underside such that it sits solidly on the floor without wobbling and without slipping or fracturing? Is normal mortar OK or do I need something else? Thanks for any wisdom, Matt.
