Tiling directly into terracotta block?

I'm re-doing a bathroom & after removing the old wall tiles & glue I'm down to the terracotta block wall. Can I tile directly into this or is there some prep work I should be doing first?

You won't get good results if the surface isn't even. Ideally it needs a plaster skim or moisture resistant plaster/backer board.
