I want to take out a window and a patio door to make one opening 3.6 mtrs
It is a single storey room on back of bungalow. Could I fit a timber beam to support joists or would I need an RSJ? I would think window and patio door openings have separate lintels but only 650mm apart. Did think of leaving the pillar in middle but it would spoil the effect.

Quite possibly a timber beam would do - but it would depend on the area of roof it would be supporting. You say the span is 3.6m, but what is the length of roof (ie 1/2 front-to-back) that the beam would be supporting?

A 75x250 C16 timber beam would be OK on that span - better still, two 50x250s bolted together.
(Assuming it's supporting a lean-to roof and not a brick gable).

That is good news, it is only a lean to roof, so will go for the two 50x250 just to be safe.
thanks again Tony
