Hello all,

I'm asking this question for a friend but I am keen to know the answer too! My friend has had a damp problem and has had it fixed. No problems there. What he asked me was "What is the board for in the wall?". I had no idea apart from suggesting that it could be for a dado rail to be fixed to. He has described it to me as a length of timber, similar to a window board being inserted in the wall between two courses of brick. What is this for????

Thanks

It depends on whereabouts in the wall this timber is, high, low?
In what wall? horizontal? Size of the timber?

It could be an old lintel. It could be, as you say, something to allow fixings.

Old stone walls were sometimes constructed about a timber frame. The timber frame was just walled-in.

More details, even a picture would help.

as above,it could be timber grounds.back in the day when there were no drills around they used to put timber in walls at certain levels and runs,so that frames and skiirtings could be fixed.
