Hello,

I live in a 1 bed flat, with 5 rads, the boiler is a Vaillant VCW 242E, it's been pretty good over the last 4 years but the last few months its needed several repairs and now a circuit board has gone and quotes have been around £300.

The boiler is around 20 years old and I can't get on any of the common repair schemes, so the questions really are:

1. Is it better to replace it and avoid any more expensive repairs?
2. What would be the best type and make of boiler to replace it? Any recommendations?
3. How much should I be paying for the complete job to replace it and flush the system etc etc... The last engineer said it would be around 2k.
4. Would it be cheaper to source the boiler myself and then pay just the labour to fit it?

Any advice much appriciated!

Thanks.

What's gone wrong with it previously? Which PCB does it need? It's got three or four I think. You may be able to get it much cheaper on the internet, 2 minutes on Google has found one for £80 but no way of knowing if it's the one you need...

Normally you'd replace a combi with a combi, Vaillant are a good make so you could stick with them, but the installer and quality of the installation is just as important as the make of boiler.

There are a huge number of variables but it could be of that order, your engineer has seen the job so he'll have more idea than anybody sat in front of a computer

Probably cheaper to get your installer to source, he'll get trade discount whereas you won't.

You'll find most RGIs will want to supply the boiler themselves than install one that you supply.

The cynic in me suggests that part of their profit comes from sourcing the parts cheaply and marking them up within their quote, however I suspect it's more a case of them sticking with the same supplier for warranty purposes etc.

A quote of £2000 to have a new boiler installed and fitted as well as a power flush doesn't seem far off the mark. I paid £1650 last year without a power flush, so in the same region.
