On reading the splashes on windows -

This is not a general solution, as I believe in taping up/protection . An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and all that.

Anyway,
When working to a surface where masking up is not practical, s spray of WD40 or vegetable oil will stop stuff sticking to the surface, and you can then wipe clean.

We first started doing this on metal frames in Police holding cells, where there were 2 sbr/opc slurry coats and three coats of sbr render applied. As coats had to be left for a while, and the tape removed after each coat, we found that WD40 worked better. I sometimes use a spray of vegetable oil on door/window frames when plastering as they clean more easily, but as I said above - taping up etc is best for most things.

Hi micilin!

sounds like a good tip, how about on oak door frames? we all know how much oak loves a bit of gypsum!!

Any timber that is not painted should be sealed/stained/oiled before plastering - that used to be a given when people knew how to build !!

If you can put Fiba-tape on untreated Oak door-frames before you plaster. You wont stop the staining ,but you get a lovely criss-cross pattern on the frame :D

indeed! but i was working in a place earlier this year that was a complete reno, oak everywhere, skirting, architrave, door linings, staircase, shelves the lot, and the chippy was 100% that the oak fitted had been oiled but it didn't stop a stain appearing on one of the door linings.

The lesson here is ,""Never trust what a joiner tells you".. He is probably getting his own back for all the times he has had to clean snots away before fitting skirtings and cleaning door-frames off with his best chisel before he can fit the architrave, They want everything done for them, I have just had to scratch and float and set a 4"block wall with 2 door frames in that the joiner put on. And he used four and three quarter inch frames!!!!!PricK!!! sorry lads...Just needed a rant  Oh and the light switch was surface mounted and we had to sink it in the block work ,think he was a bit ****ed because we put the wall plate on and ceiling joists in and built the stud wall partition.
