Hi all,

I've had a problem with the toilet in my bathroom ever since I moved into the house about a year ago. The cold water system in the bathroom often causes the toilet to start to continually refill and leak the excess water back into the pan. This has usually happened in the following situations:

- Running the cold water tap in the bath. This causes the problem to start within about 10 seconds.

- Flushing the toilet and starting the shower (separate to the bath) while toilet refilling is still in progress.

The way I used to fix this in the past was simply by flushing the toilet again. More recently, this hasn't worked, and I took the top off the cistern to see what was going on. The unit in the corner that I have photographed (right hand side of cistern image 1 in my album) seems to be the source of the problem. I found that rotating this slightly was a way to fix the problem directly.

However, yesterday this fix no longer seems to be working, and I've had to turn the water off at the mains to stop the refilling happening. The time has obviously come to fix it properly. I'm not averse to getting a plumber out to assess/fix it, but I'd like to know what I'm dealing with beforehand. If possible, please can someone advise on:

- Is replacing this unit likely to cure all of the associated problems when running the other cold water sources in the bathroom?

- How much would the part itself cost to replace?

- Is this something I could do myself, or is it more of a specialist job?

All help appreciated. Thanks!

The water level is too high, it might be a case of adjusting the valve in the corner or replacing with a fluidmaster, I would replace as its not a difficult job.
