The flushing system inside our close coupled toilet cistern has one round white button about one inch in diameter on top of it plus what looks like a black plastic spring alongside it. The cistern cover has one chrome button for a short flush plus another button for a long flush, both set in one central housing.

At present the button for the short flush is attached to a large white plastic disc which bears down on both the one inch wide button and the black plastic spring on top of the flushing system. The button for the long flush is attached to a short plastic rod which bears down only on the black plastic spring.

My feeling is that this set up is the wrong way round and that the button for the short flush should be attached to the short plastic rod and that this should bear down only on the one inch diameter white button on top of the flushing system, and that the button for the long flush should be attached to the large white plastic dish which should then bear down on both the one inch wide button and black plastic spring on top of the flushing system.

Am I right?

Many thanks, GSD

The easy way to check.

Assuming the larger button is FULL flush and smaller inside button is the HALF flush.

By flushing each, you could flush with cistern lid off to see what button causes the whole cistern to empty and likewise with half the water left in cistern.

hope that makes sense.

It sounds like an "Ideal compact" syphon, you can remove the syphon and rotate the whole thing by 180 degrees, or spin your push buttons 180 degrees to suit the flush.
