Our downstairs toilet seems to flush ok but doesn't empty properly - the water gets really high, almost to the top of the bowl, before slowly emptying. Any ideas? Please help

its partialy blocked. As its not completely blocked get a hose pipe put it below the current water level and turn it on "full blast"

You will get very wet, very quickly if that move goes wrong - not to mention covered in ****.!! Ask Mr Jones to demonstrate, or much safer is to get a mop and use it in the bowl as a plunger .The vaccuum it creates will be enough to shift most things.

Sorry do disagree, how can you create suction when the pipe is not blocked? (Now be honest i know what sort of mop you mean but when did you last see one of those? most people now have a "super dooper" style mop that won't fit in the hole) The poster quite clearly said the water does go down, all be it slower than normal, so putting a hose down and turning it on "full blast" will move the obstruction. How do you think specialist drain cleaners do it.
Besides i also said to put the hose below the water level, so it's not me that will get covered in ****

Is that the ""'Anonymous'"" when it suits him Mr Jones ( last sentence gave you away ).Sorry, do disagree. A vaccuum will be created because it is underwater and therefore has resistance to the plunging motion.Try it and see.As for the mops, there is a little old lady in my village who knocks them up and she only knows of one other old spinster deep in the forest making them too.....do me a favour,go look down your local High Street.

I never said it wasnt me, i forgot to sign it. as for the mops i never said they do not exist, i merely said most people do not have them, favoring the "new" variety of mop.

So as one of my previous posts said please read a post and understand it before you start moaning

I've got the opposite to the original problem. It emptys easily, but takes forever to fill up (approx. 10 minutes or more). Having had a couple of disasters with water in the past, I'm worried about tackling anything that could leak. What do I look for, and will it be easy to fix.

I never said that you said they didn't exist either. You inferred they were virtually extinct but I know of two reliable sources at least. Lighten up David.

I'm still stuck with a slow filling cistern (see above). I dont know much DIY, and I hate anything to do with water, so any advice need to be simple, without the risk of flooding.

First, look for the gate or it may be a stop valve supplying the cystern from the cold water storage tank (it may be in the loft) and check that it`s fully open (turn back one quarter turn when it stops, if you can find one) also check the ball valve in the cystern, the outlet may be gummed up or partially blocked or may just be so old that it needs replacing.
How old is the cystern?
Is the supply pipe lead, copper or iron?(iron will clang if hit with a metal object, lead won`t)

I've tried the hosepipe and the plunger - doesn't make any difference. We even bought a bendy metal unblocker and that hasn't worked. We've only just moved into this house - is it possible the toilet/drain is faulty? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

unless your bath/sinks take forever to drain also the problem is within your wc pipe only. I suspect those once a month things (which incidently quadruple in size when submerged in water)have been thrown down it on a regular basis by your predecessors. Going by what youve already attempted maybe the £30 plumbers call out charge may not be a bad option. The blockage wil only get worse and you may end up having to replace your bathroom carpet if left for much longer
