So, managed to screw through a pipe today (yes, idiot….). Some advice needed…
I’ve an old house and laying solid oak tongue and grove over old floor. I’ve laid floating click lock floors before a few times and whilst one of my bedrooms has the same boards as I’m about to lay- I paid someone to do that (had had an operation so couldn’t do it myself). Tbh, don’t think he did the best job of levelling sub floor as some minor dips. So, doing this myself (fairly diy savvy despite idiot mistake today).
Old Floor boards are fairly level but will need to do a few wood shims. Trouble is, pipes and a lot of electrics are sitting on top of joists in notches. There are so many nails around that my detector just basically goes off constantly. I think to secure the few wobbly boards I’m going to just have to take up and look manually.
My old boards are 22mm and laying 5.5mm ply subfloor. I’ve got some 22mm staples for that so should hopefully have no bother with penatration to under the floor/ another burst pipe.
I'd bought 45mm Tite screws for fitting the oak, and as they'll be driven at roughly a 30° angle through the tongue, I don't think they'll cause any issues either (although shout if I’m wrong)
My concern is the perimeter and board ends where I'll probably need to face-fix. I was hoping to keep everything hidden, but I'm worried about driving screws straight down because of the pipes and cables below.
What's the shortest length screw I could realistically get away with for face-fixing 18mm solid oak? Would hiring an angled flooring nailer be a better option, or could I glue the perimeter boards instead?
Thanks in advance. I've had a rubbish day and feel a bit stupid. I've done plenty of DIY over the years and never made a mistake like this before.
