can anyone advise what would be the best type of top coat for a hall way. this area takes lots of wear and i am worried that the newer water based products will not be tough enough. have looked in all DIY outlets near here and the only oil based one i can buy is brilliant white glosss which i do not want - any suggestions/advice would be welcome.

An oil based eggshell will give you a good tough finish. Easy to use, as you don't have to put on an undercoat just two top coats so you only need to buy the one tin.

eggshell is a nice finish but quite flat looking ,how about dulux satinwood it gives a very nice sheen and is oil based for hard wearing durability.
