Anyone else who can give me a proper answer rather than trying to be clever.
I was under the impression that forums were places to go for helpful advice.

In my field if anyone asks for advice I give it gladly

While woody can be a smart alec sometimes what he's saying is correct there is no strict depth for a wall plate.

The bare minimum would be 4x1 if that's what your after.

As tony1851 says 4 x 3 is a normal size , or 100 x 75mm , 65mm finished is same as a brick course ( that's if you want to go metric , I think some in building did about 50 years ago !)
p.s woody isn't the only one who can be 'clever '.

Mines 8x2. The wall plate I mean.

8x2 x 2 - wall plate and lintels combined

Anybody thinking of going metric some time in the future , it's bound to happen in building one day !:giggle:
