Hi,

I hope someone can advise. My mother used to have a gas fire with back boiler. She had central heating and combi boiler installed by homefront a couple of years ago. During this process they removed the backboiler and disconnected the fire.

She now wants to put in a gas fire insert, open fronted.

During the install of the Central heating they put pipes through the fire place and stuck the old fire infront of the opening. I believe this is due to the old parquet flooring under the carpet (only half the room is parquet hence the carpet).

She wants to keep the old fire mantle but the hearth and tiled back are on wood and need replacing I assume.

Pic of fire, you can see the flu is still in place and the pipes

Questions:

I have had various quotes. It's a class 1 chimney. Some have said the flu can stay, some of said it should be removed.

Some have said the pipes (which are active) need to come out, be moved and others have said they can stay in.

I'm not sure what is correct and what isn't.

Can someone advise on what should happen to get a gas fire insert in here? What I should be asking and looking for?

Thank you.

The copex liner should be removed, this was installed purely because c/h bbus needed them (and afaik their usual lifespan is around 20 years, but they should be replaced if a new appliance is fitted)that`s not to say you won`t need one.
Once it`s removed you need to have the integrity and flue pull checked and the chimney swept.,if these are ok,fine. If not you`ll need to install a NEW liner and have the fireplace brought up to standard.

As to the pipes,it depends where exactly they are in relation to the front and sides of the fireplace and how deep and wide your new fire is going to be but they should all be covered so they don`t corrode.
A concealed gas supply pipe will have to be run,you may be able to use the old gas pipe if it`s still there.

It would be far easier for someone who knows what they`re doing to advise you on-site,were the people you got quotes from gas safe registered with the gas fire qualification?

or your mum could put in an electric insert fire :P

Hopefully someone else will add some more advice"45yeargasman"is yer man.
