I have a towel rail in my bathroom which is plumbed into a combi boiler and I am thinking of putting an electric element in it so I can dry towels when I don't need the central heating on.

Do I need to watch out for thermal expansion? When water gets hot it will expand so is there any danger with adding an electric element?

Are all the valve fittings the same 'standard'; what I am asking here is regardless of which manufacturer heater I buy, can I be condifent the fittings will fit the towel rail?

Thanks

Keep one or both of the towel rail valves open and you don't need to worry about thermal expansion. The tappings on the towel rail should be 1/2" BSP thread and any off the shelf element should fit although you may need a T piece adapter to take both the element and the valve.
