Treating Oak slats for a garden bench

Hi,

I've recently re-built an old garden bench and replaced the slats with oak. Can anyone recommend a wood treatment to ensure the oak slats survive the outside conditions?

Not sure of the advantages/disadvantages of oil based, wax or varnish products.

Yacht varnish, I did a simiar job with a water based Ronseal product a couple of years ago but it's flaking off already. Wish I had used a decent yacht varnish in the first place, Sikens and Sadolin come to mind.
