Please can anyone help, at various times my consumer unit trips out, also the main trips from the suppler this happens at various times, I have had the Circuits tested and nothing found, This is now happening more and more and does not make sense, even in the middle of the night it will trip, I am thinking of getting a new Consumer unit fitted, but some advise would be helpful.

Many thanks in advance

Hello:-

A few questions :-

1) Does the whole consumer unit trip or just a specific MCB?

2) Does your consumer unit have an RCD? If so, is it the RCD which is tripping?

3) Can you be more specific about 'the main trips from the supplier'? Is this a separate RCD between your supplier's feed and your consumer unit?

4) What circuit tests did you have done?

5) Did you notice this starting at a certain point in time? Were any new appliances added, or wiring changes made, to your house around that time?

6) If it's happening at night, this implies it's a bit of faulty kit on a timer. Washing machine / dishwasher / electric immersion heater would be my favourites. Have you tried switching these off for a while? Any difference?

Kind Regards

Many thanks for the prompt reply :

Answers as follows :

1, The complete consumer unit trips
2, Yes,there is a main RCD on the unit & it is that that trips or the Residential circuit breaker trips.
3, From the meter the mains goes to a residential circuit breaker
4, The tests completed as recommended was a earth leakage test
5. This has been happening since we moved in last year, but it is getting more regular
6. Good point, we will try this tonight..

Again Many thanks in advance

i had the same prob once also. It was my outdoor sensor spotlight which had filled up with rainwater. Just a thought in case you had one to check it out

Ok, yes - I'd definitely say you should check for a faulty device somewhere.

As Graeme says, check things outdoors which are prone to water ingress, then look at anything else which can come on 'on its own', ie, even at night - immersion heaters in particular, when they corrode (which they do after quite a short time), are a culprit.

Good luck -

Kind Regards.
