trowel notch size for 600x400 tiles for wall

I am unsure on whether I will opt for ceramic or porcelain tiles but can you please advise on the notch I should use for this type of tile.

you dont say whether they are going on the wall or the floor?

screwfix do a 4658F combo trowel for a fiver - typically 12mm for floor and 6mm for wall

My walls are not skimmed or freshly boarded. Would it be sensible to use an 8mm trowel in this situation?
