According to the New York Times, the new deal Zelensky is being pressured to sign is even worse than the original one. Trump wants $500bn to repay the $120bn the US has put in so far. And for every extra dollar the US lends going forward he wants two dollars back. The repayments will be higher than Germany was forced to pay at Versailles as a proportion of GDP. At that time, Germany was the enemy, whilst Ukraine is supposed to be an ally.

This is only based on NYT's interpretation of what they claim to have seen. So, it could still all be a negotiating tactic. Or NYT may have misunderstood it or it might not even be true. But with the original draft, they say the figure of $500bn wasn't actually specified. That was the amount Trump had said he wanted publicly, but it wasn't written down and Ukraine hoped it would be lower. Also it wasn't clear whether the deal was purely for past aid, or did it also include future aid. Now it has been made clear that $500bn is the figure. And it seems only to cover past aid (which currently is just under $120bn). And then there is a new part covering future aid, which will have to be paid back at $2 for every extra $1 borrowed. Also, there is still no mention of any security guarantees for Ukraine.
I also believe that this might mainly be about Trump claiming a victory for his domestic audience. And that the deal isn't actually as bad for Ukraine as it appears from the headline terms.
