And that is just the Navy!!! Shocking..
The army is just as bad if not worse. You could fit our army into wembley stadium and still have empty seats. That is made up of fighting soldiers and support staff. Our armed forces no longer carry any weight in todays modern world. Cut backs and redundancy has been going on for years, politicians looked upon defence as a secondary expense we didnt need. It will take around 5 years to get us back into anywhere near being useful or able to fight in any war lasting over a month. We have virtually used our reserves up by giving it away to Ukraine. The armchair generals on here seem to think we would crush Russia in a fight, we could last a few weeks of intensive fighting and then virtually run dry.

No one cares about UK, this is 2026 not the 18th century.

We no longer have the empire to pump money into our military. Pre WW1 the navy estimates alone made up around 1/3 of the GDP of the British isles. Now we are reliant only on ourselves.

Back to Iran though:

Trump has backed down on striking Iranian power plants, presumably to avoid further escalation from Iran. It is unclear if the US and Iran are negotiating as Trump says yes and Iran says no, and I don't trust either.

Iran reportedly denies talks to end war

An Iranian source later denied that the US and Iran were holding talks about ending the war.

"There is no direct contact with Trump, not even through intermediaries. Trump retreated after hearing that our targets would be all power plants in West Asia," the unnamed source told the Iranian state-affiliated Fars News Agency.

Says a lot when Irann is more credible than Trumpf. Maybe he thinks his base will have forgotten about it all when the midterms come around

We chose to have a welfare state and NHS rather than defence. Now we pay millions handsomely to do nothing.

There is a bigger picture, though. After the Cold War, the US had a deliberate strategy of encouraging Europe to be less powerful militarily. It's very complex.

How did it do that?
First, by acknowledging that Europe didn't have a military-industrial monster with a very voracious appetite at the centres of national economies, unlike the US. They then used that to be the 'big dawg'- bases where they wanted them and military control of NATO whenever a spat cropped up. Third, monopolising arms sales to European countries other than France. Well done France.

it's a shocking state of affairs when I believe the Iranian gov over the president of the USA - just shameful the way our once great friend and ally is going
