Planning a new fireplace, with a TV over.

Had a chimney sweep round to make sure the flue is safe.

It is an external breast so the wall in the lounge is flat.

I got the sweep to draw on the wall how wide the flue is. He reckons the wall skin is not very thick and I desperately want to avoid drilling anywhere near the flue, but the TV mount fixings barely span it. Any suggestions, please?

Didn't you already ask this? Or someone did...maybe.

Unless I'm going mad, I don't think so, but I did try and search it.

Get a 'borrower' to drill from the 'inside'...

What about a stout piece of ply that spans the flue, that is screwed to the breast, with bolts inserted from the reverse to attach the TV bracket to?

That's a really bad place to locate a TV.
1. Heat from a fire will almost certainly shorten the life of the electronics.
2. The position will be such that your eye level to the screen is unnatural and cause postural discomfort.

Modern TVs are pretty lightweight. A plywood spreader is frequently suggested on other forums for TV mounts to screw into.

I shoulda gone there, but I didnae.

But I thunk of it anyhoo.

Planning to lower the TV.

As long as there is a certain depth of shelf or mantle between the fire and the TV and certain spacing, Richer Sounds are happy to honour any guarantee claim. It will be confirmed with them before installation. But I suspect the TV will last 6 years anyhow.

An oak plinth or similar will appropriately insulate the TV, it's still a bad place for TV though, due to the likely height.

Some ply approximately the width of the TV screwed to the wall at the widest part, with the mount screws going in to the ply will work.

Planning on a thick, wide piece of ply with bolts recessed into the back of it that the TV bracket will attach to, then the ply can be screwed to the wall well away from the flue.

I can then recess a double socket and a brush plate into the ply.

Wondering what length and type of fixings and plug to use... I want to get a chunk of 25mm ply. The wall is plaster over 1960 clinker block. The idea is the fixings for the TV bracket will be drilled from the back and recessed, then the bracket will be bolted on and the whole assy fixed to the breast with the fixings (I envisage 3 vertical on each side in a V shape) on either side of the flue, but well away from it.

Don't want to go OTT. The load will be up to a 65" TV plus the bracket and of course, the wood, which will be around 800mm x 350mm, possibly 900 x 500, but no bigger.

I'm thinking 4 inch fixings but I have no idea of the type or the plug.

My head's in a spin now.

I like to over-engineer things and make sure they are not going anywhere.

But I've read instructions for this TV mount and now rung the helpline.
They say the ply should be 38mm thick.

Now, the size I want the ply, plus the weight of the bracket, plus the TV and the fact the bracket is an extending one, I'm doing my head in trying to work out the fixings are well adequate.

I want to size it for the largest TV the mount can carry, which is 65", so that could be 24kg, plus the mount, plus the timber, plus the fact that the mount extends out.

I was originally thinking 3x 8mm thick screws of suitable length with Fischer Duopower plugs at each end of the ply bearer in a V shape. But now I doubt myself.

Any suggestions, please?
