I was piqued at BAS's last so spent a few hours mugging-up and "surfing" (purely on the www, none of the books I ordered have arrived yet)

In the humble opinion of a jolly-jack come ashore,
A great deal of first-principles stuff is hidden by arcane abbreviations. In the course of preparatory revision for this unwelcome rewiring project, I have come across not a single "difficult" principle - so far - but many, many needless abbrev's.

And a deal of nay-saying under a Yankee flag.

You're not wrong there..

Nope - like I said, it's not rocket science. But have you, even once, come across something which is easy to understand, obvious from first-principles-stuff, but nevertheless you've thought "Blimey - I never would have thought of that.."?

- so far - but many, many needless abbrev's.

Abbreviations are rarely needless - they're either time/space saving acronyms, like EFLI, EEBADS, RCD, or they are symbols, such as In, Zs, Ze. What have you encountered that you think are needless?

BAS, you are quite right, they are not needless. I was full of P&V. Apols. Just that I'm on unfamiliar Ground, if you'll pardon the pun.

I really do appreciate your collective help.

If it helps, I haven't started my plan (awaiting floor areas & books) yet. And you're right, I just have the project in my head and am firing off questions as they occur to me.

I am aware of the need for proper selection of a CU or "fusebox" as we call them for some obscure reason. Honestly - "consumer unit"...??? this could be anything from a carton of orange juice to a white washing machine to the uninitiated.
(incidentally, I was taught at high school that a CU was the meter)

Maybe someone could post a list of checkpoints for a rewiring?

Accepted. And quite true, this has happened a few times in the last few days. The last memorable one being the detail about fuses decreasing in rating as they get further along the busbar... good principle, but not immediately obvious.

Actually these moments happen quite a lot!
