It looks like the loop is not there, so must be at the ceiling.
Also, that's only two switches.

As you are having it rewired I would suggest running the supply to the switch.

Interestingly we found that the wall lights were wired separately to the main light and not in conduit.

And so the live feed comes from the CU to the light switch, and then to the sight lights. In addition from the CU to the lounge after passing through two other lights in loop.

Entirely separate conduit they ran in. Does this make sense?

Well it's not consistent but there's nothing wrong with its topology.

The reality is that you are not capable of carrying out these jobs. Hire an Electrician.

The reality is I rewired the entire lighting conduit here as I intended and used the help here and yout negative comments to help to do it. =)
 
The reality may be that you rewired it incompetently and it is not properly done.
