Type of underlay over garage

We are putting carpet in box room which is above the garage. Which type of underlay would give the best insulation and sound proofing?

Is garage ceiling insulated ? If not, would undoubtedly be much more effective to do that .

Given that underlay is measured in mm and insulation - both thermal and acoustic - is measured in tens and hundreds of mm, the insulating effect of underlay will be minimal/unnoticeable.

Thanks for that, the garage ceiling isn't insulated so what would the best type of insulation to fill this void with?

Aside from your insullation, carpet underlay's do have Tog ratings, a Felt underlay will have higher tog rating than Rubber or PU Foam underlays.

Underlay has Tog ratings to help in matching tolerance's over underfloor heating systems but can also be used to understand insulation performance in other circumstances such as your's.

I would fill the void with fibre-wool insulation. Currently very cheap.
