Whats the difference between the different types of sand available, like sharp sand, builders sand, etc.

I was planning to use sharp sand in all concrete and morter mixes for building (external) walls with bricks and blocks, above and below dpc. Is that a good idea, if I want a strong wall, or should I be using a different type for each job?

No you need what we called Pit sand (some builder merchants are now calling it builder sand)

Pit sand for bricklaying,

Soft washed sand for repointing,

Sharp sand for floor screed and most other things,

20mm Ballast sand for concrete
