Hello,
I am currently having an extension built and as part of the scope the builder is going to install underfloor heating throughout the rest of the house. The existing house is 2001 built and block and beam floor. The builder was planning to break out the existing screed and insulation, then install new throughout and integrate the level of the extension to the existing.
Today the builder dug a trial hole on the existing house and found that there is no insulation in the existing floor!!!! There is simply a 50mm deep screed on top of the block and beam, which is made of concrete beams and thermalite blocks!! Obviously this is not the finding we were hoping for, but explains why the floors are so damn cold during winter!!
Anyway, because the whole house is to be done, it has been considered that the floor level could be raised slightly to try and accomodate some insulation. The biggest constraint would be the front door, which gives a max scope of 35mm.
Does anyone have any experience of the low profile underfloor heating and insulation systems that are available and how effective they are? I would really like to have underfloor heating, but want to make sure it would work properly, so would like to know before committing? The maximum working thickness of the screed and insulation could realistically be 80 - 85mm.
