Underground drainage protection in garden

In process of removing a concrete path around the house and reverting back to lawn.

Digging down I can see the crown of the pipe is near the surface we want to change the area back to the lawn with stepping stones, so only foot traffic, do I need to protect the drainage in some way, and if so how?

Yes. With concrete. May only be foot traffic now, but if someone comes along at shoves a fork or spade through the pipe... Possibly why the path was laid over it in the first place.

If it's that close to the surface, I'd expect the lawn to die above the pipe?!
