We have had the following work done to our house by a local plumber:-

New central heating system (new boiler, how water tank etc.)
New gas cooker fit
New bathroom re-fit

All the gas and water works were completed by what we have now discovered to be a non-Gas Safe registered trader (he held himself out as GS registered but foolishly we didn't ask to see his card).

We have reported this to Gas Safe and Trading Standards. GS have inspected the works and have made a report to the HSE. We have yet to hear from Trading Standards.

Whilst all this is going on, we know that we need various sign-off certificates under Building Regs but, being new to all this and no longer having contact with the illegal trader, we need to know exactly what we need.

I have found out that we need the boiler commissioned and signed off, but is there anything else which needs signing off as far as the hot water tank/water regs is concerned? And anything else we need to know?

Many thanks for any help and guidance.

To correct your situation in relation to the boiler you need to have it reinstalled and commissioned and notified to building control. Many would charge up to £200 for that. Some will not have anything to do with it but Gas Safe take the view that its better checked and commissioned than not so we are allowed to do that.

Technically it needs to be removed from the wall to do that properly. Some may be prepared to not remove it but that the risk they take.

The gas pipe/cooker connection needs to be checked.

The cylinder only needs commissioning if it is an unvented. For a guarantee you need a receipt for it. Possibly if any claim a commissioning engineer's report might suffice. They rarely fail.

Please keep us informed of what happens with the plumber. Don't forget IF you have paid him then you could take out a court claim against him for the cost of correcting the problems. Do you know exactly who he is? Tell us about the money aspects?
