The floor joists have been renewed in my bathroom BUT the builder has fitted untreated joists. I think these should be treated, is this correct? Do these have to be ripped out and replaced or can some form of paint on treatment be applied to the untreated timbers?

I wouldn't worry too much but you could use a water based boron treatment.

yes he shouldve used pre treated/tanilized timber but its not the end of the world that he hasnt,if the builder is still on site ask/tell him to carry out timber treatment by spraying with a suitable insecticide.

as far as i'm aware it isn't a requirement in the building regs.

treated is a little more expensive than untreated, but it's a negligible cost on a small project unless the budget is tight.

if you are having P5 chipboard flooring then it is water resistant anyway, and damage in the form of rot caused by water is more likely than insect damage.......
