Hi

I'm posting on behalf of my parents. They are struggling with their external door lock. Orginally it wouldnt unlock from the outside (but would from the inside). This lock is shown in the middle on the picture. they replaced it with the bottom lock (which was the wrong size). They then replaced it with lock on the top of the picture. It will now lock form the inside, but not from the outside, it feels jammed (but will unlock from the outside if locked from the inside). Any suggestions? If they need someone to come out to it, is it a locksmith or a door fitter? I think the door is probably about 20 years old if that helps!

Thanks in advance

How well does the door fit in the frame?

Are they able to pull the door shut from the inside, and are therefore able to lock it? i.e. they can get the lock to line up properly by pulling it from the inside, but they can't from the outside.

The fact that it's a new lock suggests it's more likely to be the door fitment that's at fault.

From your picture, it's not clear to me how the lock fits in the door, what type of lock we're dealing with, or the type of door. More pics of the lock and the door would help you get a better answer.

With the door open try and operate the door locking mechanism. If it works fine then it's an issue with door alignment. If not then you have an issue with either the door gearbox, or the cylinder barrel. Depending on how good you are with diy depends on whether you need someone who understands upvc locks. Cylinder barrel you seem to have removed , so maybe worth trying to replace like for like at places such as screw fix...if you still have a fault then it's definitely the gearbox , which means youd need to remove the whole locking system to ascertain exactly which gearbox youd need

Try fitting the barrel in the other way around to see if the fault follows it
