I have a uPVC back door with a simple locking system just two sliding things that go in U shaped holders on the frame. sometimes when i go to lock the door i can turn the key 1/2 way round but then it jams up so i open the door and try locking it again but it does the same thing again, but when i hit or kick the door at the bottom it locks fine. it only does it a couple of times a week. the door is quite old about 20-25 years

I guess the bits that slide aren't properly aligned with the 'U's, especially the lower one if you have to kick it. Unscrew this 'U' from the frame and see if it will now close/lock OK. If so refit the 'U' and then adjust it (hole should be elongated) until the door closes OK. If unlucky the door may have sagged too much for this to work.
