Have noticed a couple of words (there may well be more) that Americans pronounce differently to us.

These words have another word within them and those words within the longer words are pronounced as if they were on their own.

Confused?

For example, the word "cow" on its own rhymes with "now". But, when it is part of "Moscow", we pronounce the "cow" part as if it rhymes with "dough".

Also, "post" rhymes with "ghost". When part of "compost", we pronounce it as if it rhymes with "lost".

I'm sure there are other words like this, but I can't think of any right no. I mean now....

(See what I did there?:))

That's how new languages evolve - eventually.

What about Indian pronunciation in India. They emphasise different syllables - noozy land - devil opment.

It's like here. Many words are spelt the same but sound completely different.

The ground was too tough for the plough to go through. Or is it, The ground was too tuff for the pluff to go thruff.

Of course there is the famous word "ghoti".

How do you say it?

Fish, of course!
