Hi,

I have an 18 year old Myson Economist which apart from a small problem at the moment with the thermocouple has been excellent. It cost me £60 all but 15 years ago ! I love it. But i have been told (by my plumber pal) that in April you will only be able to fit combi boilers should my beloved break down  Can anybody shed light on this sorry state of affairs. I was thinking of trying to buy a used boiler now, so i have one in ''reserve'', but after April will i even be able to have it fitted ?

When you say "break down" if you mean irrevocably then the answer's "Yes". It's in the new set of building regulations, Part L. All new installations from April Fool's Day 2005 must be condensing boilers unless there's an exceptional circumstance. (And I'm afraid that doesn't include nostalgia unless you can convince the authorities that it's "historic")!

So, providing you can keep repairing the boiler - all well and good, but you won't be able to replace it with a used model of the same type (but then again who's to know?)

Thanks for that, just as i expected, my neighbour is a corgi registered plumber who fitted this one a while ago, i am hoping he will ''do the honours'' should the need arise, but yes i think i may purchase an emergency used boiler in case, i have seen them for £100-£150 which is not bad considering the price of the new ones or a combi boiler, cheers for the advice.
