Using lead as a chimney cap

As a result of leakage, we had some repair work done on our roof. The roofer also wrapped lead around the top of the unused chimney as a cap. In retrospect it looks ugly, however is this safe? (considering lead can be poisonous). I'm not sure whether he also left some air gaps to avoid damp building up neither.

That was the old way of sealing redundant flues, only difference they would have welded a length of pipe on top of the cap.

Lead is poisonous but only if you eat it ;)
