Hi

I have very old wallpaper paste (basically impossible to get off) and stains on several wall in our house and need to emulsion over the lot.

I've heard that I could use a Shellac based primer to paint over just these bits (rather than the whole of every wall), then give it a couple of coats of Magnolia emulsion?

Actually is it ok to emulsion paint over say a oil based undercoat, this would probably do the trick? Do you have to rub down after to get the emulsion to take?

You really should consider removing the paste before painting, warm water and a wide blade scraper can achieve wonders. If the walls have been prepainted you could also use sugar soap, any remaining stained areas could then be sealed with a shellac based primer.
