Using VLC with UBUNTU

Would be grateful for any advice on starting to use VLC with Ubuntu.
For instance, how do I load and play audio files.

select a video/audio file on any location on the disk or network
then right click open with and check the use default option
if its installed, it should actually be the first choice/option that comes up on right click
