Hi. My first post. had vaillant 828 for 5 years now. A heating engineer said it was the dogs whatsits, so I got 1. British gas fitted it :( Problems from day 1.
DHW heat was colder in winter due to colder water coming in. Flow was poor. they said screw in valve to reduce incoming flow :( So I have for the last 5 years. Took rad of after year2 to decorate. Rad was full of muck. They said they did a power flush. Year 4 Crap in rads again. Did a proper power fluff (all day) first time took a few hours.

Anyway apart from that, not 2 bad. After 5 years, my cover came to an end. Problems start. DHW starts to get colder, so I screw valve in to make water hotter...no effect. Then boiler starts to heat rads up when remote stat asn't instructed it to do so. So I change batteries on stat transmitter. Still comes on by itself. I check Stat receiver and it hasn't instructed boiler to go on. ( green light, also no rad picture at boiler display, just a flashing "C").
Then I come home one day and boiler is shut down. Water every where. The Rubber hose split. So I change it. It was full of like carbon/Cole like deposits. After fitting a new pipe, the DHW temp stays at a HOT 81, before it was up and down. I guess the Heat exchange is full of crap. I then drain the trap below HE. This war full of bits. Should this be clean?. After bust pipe I had to dry out all electrics. Stat receiver was wet, control panel was wet. Anyway its works fine now, but still the boiler comes on on its own. When I press "I" it says S.24. No Rad picture or tap picture. Sometimes its for about 5 seconds, but sometimes it stays on. Outside temp is warm, so cold stat shouldn't be it.
ANYONE!

I think that your problems mostly result from a badly done installation where the system was not properly cleaned.

In my ( limited ) experience when the install is done by BG staff its usually pretty good but the problems usually happen when they use subcontractors who cut corners.

All of your system and the waterways in your boiler should be clean! The plate HE has probably become rather blocked which is spoiling the hot water performance.

Because of the way the boiler senses DHW flow the boiler coming on for CH would either be a faulty boiler PCB ( unusual fault for those ) or most likely a faulty thermostat sensor. Of course any water on electrical circuits can cause unexpected results.

Ny now you should have had a failed diverter valve replaced, perhaps several years ago.

You have not made it very clear if the hot water is working now. If NOT then the boiler is probably coming on in the DHW preheat mode but the diverter valve is stuck in ( or mostly in ) the CH position.

We charge about £190 to replace those diverters including a service but its quite an easy DIY job.

A quick check to see if you have an un-modified diverter is to check the holes drilled into the side of the valve. If they are about 1mm it is an old valve if they are about 3mm it is a new one 5 years is probably the newer one as i have the same blr which i fit in feb 2003 & has never let me down

Just to make things difficult there were a few of the old insides still fitted inside valves with the large side holes.

The later design valves have side holes of about 7.52 mm diameter and the old ones about 3-4 mm although I have not measured one exactly.

Chris has I think found several of the new design failed and I have found one!

All the symptoms he describes point me to a failed diverter valve!

The DHW side is running spot on now. I think the split hose caused a sudden loss of pressure resulting in most of the crap coming out, leaving the solid crusty bits. There was a fair amount of sludge as well. I think the boiler was made in 2001 and fitted in dec 2002. Am I correct saying the new diverters are the poor ones? If so, why did they re mod something to be worse?

Didn't realise that the DV was a problem on the Ecomax 828/2E, or do you mean a turbomax?

I have the ecomax 828/2.
Cant u also tell me what the main HE does as compared to the CH heat exchange

I’ve had two turbomax boilers go down with split hoses. Now I fit Magnaclean filters on all Vaillants they seem to be way to sensitive to debris in the system.
