Vaillant turbomax vuw242 no ch but hw

Hello

Boiler (Vaillant turbomax vuw242) is about 10 yrs old, very recently the central heating has packed up but we are getting hot water, the radiator light is on and the click and normal whirring noise commences but the boiler does not fire up to provide central heating.

Any advice / comments would be appreciated

Also whats the difference between a vcw 242 and a vuw 242 ?

VCW (Compact) was the version before the VUW (Turbomax). The original VUW didn't last very long and was replaced by the Turbomax Plus (824) which is still current.

I think the W stands for Water (or rather Wasser, being German boilers), so the VC and VU versions were system boilers (not Combis) that did not do Hot Water.

As for your problem, you need to look at the manual, check the lights being shown on the control panel, and post again with more detail.
