Hi. Last year I noticed the pilot light on the above fire was slowly getting smaller and if the fire did light, the gas would shut off for a bit. I got it serviced and it was all fine. I am now having the exact problem again so I called a gas engineer (different gut to the one I called out last year) for a service and see what the problem was. He says that the gas fire has a low pressure and so I need new gas pipes. I have been thinking about this and I don't understand why I need new gas pipes as the pressure was fine after servicing last year. Could it not just be a new Thermocoupler and new pilot burner unit? If someone could help explain that would be great.

Could be possible, although sounds like just pilot needs cleaned out.Maybe it isnt Whats causing the problem but this engineer has noticed a problem with the pressure that the last guy missed.

Have you had any other work done on other gas appliances or had a new boiler fitted?
Could be many things, including problem with gas meter regulator.

Give the guy a call back and ask him politely to explain why he thinks this.

Thanks brassed off. The pressure was fine last year. I saw him check it. Nope. I had a boiler fitted the same time as the fire was serviced so bit confused. Waiting him to come back to me with a price and will ask then but thought I would see what someone else thought as am confused! Just seemed strange as he didn't check the pipes under the floor but maybe looking at the gas shut off valve was enough. He also had a quick look at the boiler and the gas fire and said they were fine although he said that the flue hadn't been installed properly and so he fixed that.

No probs. But remember he may be right. By checking the gas working pressure at the gas meter with all gas appliances on, he may have found an issue with incorrectly sized pipes. This is a safety issue and cannot be ignored.

Thanks again brassedoff and yep he may be right but I'm just trying to understand. (I read up on gas regulations when I got my new boiler too...geeky I know!)

He did check the gas at the meter and the cooker and boiler wasn't on when he did. Then he checked the pressure at the pressure test point on the fire. So if the pressure was low I guess that's why he thinks its the pipes, maybe? Is that right?

Am I right in thinking that if the above is right it's a safety issue because there maybe a gas leak? I dwell on things and so really appreciate the replies!

Dont get into a fluster and be worrying about leaks and things.
The only people that can tell you the issue is people that have been to the job.
Just speak to the engineer again.
Dont panic yourself.
