Varifocal or fixed lense?

If you reduce the fov with a varifocal its pretty much a zoom isnt it? So you could potentially zoom past things close to the camera?

Whereas say i got a camera with a 6mm lense, narrower field of view than a 4mm but the picture isnt isnt zoomed in so would also see right underneath the camera?

Is that correct or am i way off?

way off, it doesn't work that way exactly.

think of it like this.

look straight ahead what you see is your field of view, tilt your head up or down and that's what is in your field of view. ie your eyes are the position of the camera.

wrt to lenses or varifocals.

Put your arms in a V in front of you, the cameras angle of view is the angle between your two arms.
As you get closer to the object bring your arms closer together. Horizontal field of view on a 2.8mm camera this is about 90 to 100 degrees but does vary.

vertically sky to floor, so think baby shark, daddy shark 2.8mm baby shark 13mmm...……. that's not scientific but should give you an idea of whats going on with FOV.

not sure how else to describe it.
