Varnish painted chairs

Depends on the paint you used, water based ? then a top coat of varnish is advisable.
Thanks guys, its just that the paint seems to come off easily and I thought varnish might stop this happening.
Did you prime the chairs to take the paint? failure to do this will not key the surface and paint will fail.
