Vauxhall Astra

He has left the old chain in a box in my boot.
I did ask him to do all related works required to get it running which he doesn't appear to have done.
Annoying really as I'm having to rely on lifts or borrowing my wife's car

Its essential to meet this guy.....to replace a timing chain is one thing but to remove the cylinder head to replace valves as necessary would triple the bill at least......no mechanic is going to dive in to that without strict permission.

It doesn't look the best, Tom - but you've been placed in a rotten situation really..... !
A new chain may have solved all of your problems, and given you many more miles. However, the only thing to do was to have a new chain fitted, which has to be paid for naturally enough. However as you've found there are now other issues which could mean the chain replacement is money down the drain.
Very unfortunate, this one and in retrospect a snapped timing chain or belt almost always has other effects and a replacement engine can be the way to go.
Do contact the mechanic and report back - you have my sympathy here.
John :)

I think I might put it on eBay for spares or repair and cut my losses
