Hi Chaps

I have 400mm gaps from rafter to rafter in my loft and wanted to ask if there is a velux I can get this wide, most I am seeing is 47mm - 55mm, but that would mean cutting into a rafter to fit as these would be too wide, is there smaller velux that would fit, if not can I cut into a rafter to fit a velux and strengthen afterwards.
Thanks

yes you can cut out, usually you double up the ones either side along most of the length, support the one you'll cut, then frame above and below with doubled cross pieces.
you would usually have an opening wider than the window as you need space for plasterboard and you are supposed to splay it at a diagonal to let the light in better. rather than having square reveals which don't work so well in thick insulated buildups.

Thanks John so looks like I need to cut and do that, least I know its safe to do so, thanks again.
