Situation - mid '60s built 2 bed bungalow. Traditional framed rafter construction, some internal load bearing walls.
Loft conversion will be 2 bedrooms with velux, 1 bathroom. Bathroom has small (2.5m wide) flat roof dorma.
After structural engineers report contractor wants to increase quote as didn't expect that rafters need to be strengthened by doubling up with 50x150mm timbers. They say that its not often needed. I am surprised allowance wasn't already made for this as I would have expected that strengthening of rafters would be needed in the vast majority of conversions.
So the question :- In *general*, would you expect most conversions of this type to need rafters doubled up to strengthen them?
(To clarify asking about rafters not joists)
